Editorial

Dear customers, dear partners,

The results of the parliamentary elections in Poland have resulted in a victory for the conservative party in power in terms of the number of votes, but also a victory for the opposition parties, which won a majority in cumulative votes. Although the new government has not yet been implemented, all indications are that it will be represented by the opposition parties, headed by the former Prime Minister and President of the European Parliament, Donald Tusk. The new government is expected to forge closer relations with the European Union and strengthen the country's business climate.

Piotr Mrówczyński

Project manager, Valians International

These political developments are all the more important as Poland has become a key player on the European and even international scene, thanks to its position in the Ukrainian context, its industrial relocation projects from Asia and its economic growth, which is among the most dynamic in Europe. In this Newsletter, you'll find the highlights of the last quarter in Poland, but also in Eastern Europe and within Valians International.

This month, we have also decided to focus on the Polish M&A sector. This sector enjoyed a dynamic 2022, despite the economic and political uncertainties that weighed on Europe. In 2023, the outlook remains favorable for market players, who can take advantage of the sustained growth of the Polish economy, the availability of financing and the country's attractiveness to foreign investors. However, there are a number of challenges ahead, not least the continuing uncertainty of the economic environment, as well as legal hurdles, particularly when it comes to initial audits. To find out more, read our Focus of the month here.

Finally, you'll also find our two E-Books edited by our teams on key topics: The medical sector in Poland and Poland's role in the reconstruction of Ukraine.

I hope you enjoy reading them.

Poland has been playing a crucial role in the support of Ukraine from the 1st day of the invasion and appears to be a strategic partner in light of the reconstruction plans for Ukraine.

A joint assessment conducted in March by Ukraine and the World Bank estimated that the recovery cost is expected to reach $411 billion, approximately 2.6 times Ukraine’s GDP for 2022, and is supposed to grow further as the conflict persists.

What is currently the existing position of Poland in this reconstruction plan?

How are the past and current business relationships between Poland and Ukraine?

Can Poland be a bridgehead for foreign companies in the reconstruction plans of Ukraine?

We hope you'll read this eBook and learn more about the economic situation of Ukraine.

OPPORTUNITIES & MARKET TRENDS

POLAND: among the best retail results in Europe

Poland was one of the countries to post a positive performance, with an increase in retail sales volume of 1.7% in August 2023 compared with July 2023, and 4.2% compared with August 2022. These figures testify to the resilience of the Polish market, which benefits from strong domestic demand and public support for businesses and households.

Retail in Europe is therefore a mixed bag, with some countries recovering from the crisis faster than others. We'll be keeping a close eye on developments in this sector over the coming months, depending on the health situation and the measures taken by governments to support the economy.

POLAND: Acceleration of electromobility solutions

Volkswagen and Umicore, two giants in the field of electric mobility, have chosen Poland as a strategic partner for their Lonway joint venture, which will build a new plant to produce battery parts at competitive prices. Poland is an ideal country to host this ambitious project, which will strengthen its leading position in the renewable energies sector. The project is supported by Poland and the European Union, which have granted 350 million euros in financial aid as part of a program to develop alternatives to fossil fuels. ♻️

CEEC : Hungary turns to Serbia

Hungary and Serbia are working to strengthen the electricity interconnections between the two countries. Their capacity is set to double by 2028. Negotiations are also underway for the construction of an oil pipeline between the two countries. With a capacity of around 5.5 Mt/year, this pipeline is intended to strengthen Hungary's energy security and increase competition, against a backdrop of rising costs from Croatia and Ukraine. Serbia, which became a European hub a few years ago, uses Roszke as a transit point.

China-PECO: 10 years of  "Belt and Road"

For the past 10 years, these agreements have been based on the cooperation mechanism between China and the CEECs, which has strengthened dialogue and exchanges in various sectors, such as infrastructure, finance, agriculture and tourism. Data from China's Ministry of Commerce show that bilateral trade and investment have grown steadily since 2012, reaching nearly $20 billion respectively. Furthermore, the completion of emblematic "Belt and Road" projects, such as the Port of Piraeus, the Budapest-Belgrade railroad or the China-Europe freight train, has helped to make the CEECs key players in European logistics, notably Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.

ROMANIA: IKEA Group invests heavily in green energy in Romania.

Ingka Investments, the investment division of the Ingka Group, owner of IKEA stores, acquires a 300 MW ready-to-build photovoltaic park in Romania with an investment of over 200 million euros.

The photovoltaic project is located in the Dâmbovița region and has a total capacity of 300 MWp. Once operational, by the end of 2025, it will be able to produce enough renewable energy for the equivalent of around 170,000 homes in Romania.

NEWS FROM VALIANS

SEAFOOD KOREA - Successful mission between South Korean fish and seafood industry players and Polish buyers in Warsaw

The SEAFOOD KOREA event took place from October 23 to 25, 2023. A delegation of 9 Korean companies offering SEAFOOD products attended the event.

Over the three days, Valians International teams organized the entire mission in terms of logistics, organization and B2B meetings, enabling the Korean companies to develop their first business contacts in Poland.

The mission was a great success with both Polish and Korean players. The main Polish distributors, importers and retail chains, as well as the Polish Association of Fish Processors, a customs agency and wholesalers were able to exchange ideas and gain a better understanding of the products sought by the Polish market and the import procedures they must follow to export their goods to Poland.

CULTURE

Halloween in Poland

Is Halloween, the festival of the undead, witches and pumpkins, really a foreign tradition in Poland? Not at all! There's an ancient pagan festival in this country called Dziady, which celebrated the ancestors and is very similar to Halloween as we know it. You may know this festival from the poet Adam Mickiewicz, who made it the subject of two of his works. He describes how the Poles used to prepare banquets for the souls of the departed, complete with food, drink and fruit. Sound familiar? Indeed, it's exactly like the candy that children collect as they go door-to-door on Halloween night! Dziady is therefore the Polish ancestor of Halloween, but also of the more religious November 2 Feast of the Dead. Today, Halloween is becoming increasingly important in Poland, and decorations, costumes, parties and events are everywhere !
